About Us
WFHC Team Members celebrate Halloween 2007In 1974, a small group of dedicated feminists and mid-level clinicians came together and started the Women’s Health Care Project as part of a larger social change movement in Santa Monica, California. They helped women learn more about their bodies and their health, share experiences and empowered them through knowledge.
Throughout the years, the Women’s Health Care Project expanded to include prenatal care, pediatric services, adolescent health care and, most recently, a family practice program that includes a strong healthy aging component.
In a clinic of just 1,585 square feet, we see more than 7,400 women, men and children in more than 22,700 visits. An additional 10,000 community health education encounters are logged yearly. Nearly 90% of our clients are uninsured and 92% living at or below 200% of the federal poverty level.
Throughout our history the names may have changed, but the mission remains the same. We believe that by providing direct care services that dignify and encourage client involvement in decision-making about health care, we are cultivating a new generation of women and families that, in spite of poverty and other challenges, have the knowledge and resources to make informed decisions for themselves and their families.
